The stories I tell
live in me first.
Freddy Portillo is an author and poet, writing from Chula Vista, California — just south of San Diego. His work grows out of the everyday life of family and neighborhood: the kitchens, the cookouts, the long conversations, and the small moments that turn out to matter most.
He writes the stories he has lived, and tells them the way they were meant to be told — plainly, warmly, and with an ear for the music of how people actually speak. His debut collection, Carne Asada & Pan Dulce, gathers stories and poems that read like being pulled up to the table and handed a plate.
He publishes his work through Freddy P Publishing, his own independent imprint, with two new titles — What Grows in the Cracks and How I Write — on the way.
Carne Asada & Pan Dulce — A Collection of Stories and Poems
A debut collection gathering the stories and poems Freddy Portillo has carried for a lifetime — tender, funny, and unflinching by turns. Rooted in family kitchens, backyard cookouts, and the everyday rituals that hold a life together, these pages serve memory the way it is meant to be shared: at the table, with the people you love.
What Grows in the Cracks: A Foraging Guide for the Rest of Us
A foraging guide rooted in canyon walks, family memory, and the edible plants growing through the sidewalk cracks of Chula Vista. What your grandmother already knew — and what Nena found first.
How I Write
Not a textbook. Not a masterclass. Just an honest look at how a kid from San Diego who learned to read a room before he could read a book ended up with stories worth telling — and what happens between the first thought and the last word.
